Product Review: Clarins Extra Firming Day & Night Cream

I received samples of the Clarins Extra Firming Day and Night Cream in my January Glossybox.  There was a bit of controversy about these samples, but in the end I think the real problem was that Clarins sent samples that contained 15ml of product in a 30ml sized tube, making it appear that people had been short-changed.  But despite all that, I have really been enjoying these two products.

Both creams smell and feel the same.  They sink into the skin quickly and don’t leave you feeling greasy.  I didn’t use a night cream before so the Clarins Night cream has been a welcome addition to my skincare routine.  The creams are scented lightly and smell quite nice, it’s not something that lingers though.

The creams are quite thick and you don’t need a lot of product to cover your face.  For my day cream, I think I still prefer my Monu Revitalising Moisturizer, but it is a close call.  If you did receive these samples from Glossybox, cut your tubes open once you think they are empty.  I did this and there was seriously a ton of product still left in there due to the thick consistency.

What do you think of Clarins products?

Favorite Products of 2011!

2011 was a pretty decent year for me, started a new job, had my wedding in the states, moved into a lovely new flat, can’t really complain.  But I am excited for 2012 and already have some exciting things to look forward to (Barbados in February being the main event, yay delayed honeymoon!).  2011 was also a good year for me as I discovered quite a few new cosmetics brands as I began familiarizing myself with UK beauty brands, so here are my top picks for 2011:

1.  ELF Eyelid Primer-This stuff is amazing, I picked it up on a whim during a 40% off ELF ordering spree.  I never had used an eyelid primer before this and the difference was incredible.  This primer makes my eyeshadow stay put all day and at only a £1.50 you can’t go wrong.

2.  MUA Heaven and Earth Palette-A steal at £4, this palette was rampantly featured when it came out this year on beauty blogs across the web and with good reason.  I use this gorgeous neutral toned palette almost every day.  The pigmentation is amazing and the range of colours can be used to create a ton of looks.

3.  Soap and Glory Hand Food-I started using this hand cream after seeing it featured in youtube videos on missglamorazzi and FleurdeForce’s channels.  It’s not too greasy, the smaller size is perfect hand bag size and it smells delicious.  This is definitely a staple that I will be purchasing again and again.

4.  Monu Revitalising Moisturizer-I received this moisturizer in my November Glossybox and after using Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture for years, I was converted.  This moisturizer smells lovely, leaves your face perfectly matte, while leaving your skin soft and supple.  Love.

5.  Maybelline Dream Matte Powder-I started using this face powder in Rose Ivory earlier this year and have repurchased it a few times since then.  It is my perfect face powder and it takes the shine off of your face and keeps it matte practically all day long.  When my skin is behaving, I just dot on a bit of concealer and brush this powder over my face and there’s no need for foundation!  The packaging is also really cool with a swing out mirror.

6.  Cover Girl Lashblast Fusion Mascara-I have tried mascara after mascara, but this is the one for me.  I love that is lengthens and defines my lashes without making them look clumpy or spidery.

7.  Rituals Foaming Shower Gel-Another item from Glossybox (the December box).  I love this foaming shower gel, it smells amazing, lightly scents your skin, leaves your skin soft, and can also double up as a shaving cream.  It is also fun to use, which is a plus 🙂

8.  17 Fast Finish Nail Polish-I picked up this brand on a whim when I was looking for a red Barry M nail polish to do Christmas nails and Boots was completely sold out of that particular Barry M colour.  I am so glad I gave this brand a go though because for bargain nail polishes (Barry M and ELF), it lasts a lot longer, dries a lot faster, and is just a better formula in my opinion.

9.  Dove Beauty Finish Anti-Perspirant Deodorant-I know, I know, deodorant, how  exciting!  But we all use it (I hope) so it’s going on the list.  I love Dove products anyway, but was a bit skeptical when this product came out with its claims of “beauty minerals”.  Not sure what beauty minerals are supposed to do to your armpits, but this deodorant smells lovely (nicer than my standard cucumber) , is moisturizing and does the job and its pink.

So there are my top picks for 2011!  What are your favorite products that went strong this year?  What new products did you try that have become staples?

Product Review: Monu Revitalising Moisturizer

I received my Monu Revitalising Moisturizer in my November Glossybox, you can read my review of the box here.  My current facial moisturizer is Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture with SPF 15.  I have been using this moisturizer for years and have always been quite happy with it, but I was excited to try out a new product.

Some things I look for in a moisturizer, besides the obvious such as not giving me a horrible red face rash*coughBoudoirPrivefacemaskscough*, are that it contains SPF (don’t want that horrible wrinkled sun damaged skin of chronic tanners when I’m older), that it adequately moisturizes because my skin is prone to dry out, and that it doesn’t leave my skin greasy.

With the Monu Revitalising Moisturizer, I noticed right away that it is a lot thicker than my Neutrogena product.  This made it a bit more work to evenly distribute over my face and neck and I found that I needed to use more product because of this.  I did like that it left my skin a lot more matte lookin.  My old moisturizer does leave my skin quite greasy looking which I usually cover with a face powder.  The scent of the product is lovely, it is almost citrusy and fresh, very nice.

As far as price, the Monu Revitiasing Moisturizer retails for £16.95 for 50 ml, my Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer retails for £9.95 for 120 ml so there is quite a price difference.  I will have to see what sort of long term results I get with the Monu Moisturizer before I decide if its worth the switch or not.  Did you receive this moisturizer in your Glossybox?  Have you had a chance to give it a go yet and what are your thoughts?

November Glossybox Review

After the hiatus with my first Glossybox (reviewed here), I resubscribed in time to receive November’s Glossybox.  Now before I started my subscription again, I had a good look around and did some research on was considered the best beauty box out there, there’s Glossybox, Boudoir Prive, Carmine, Feel Unique, and the list goes on.  What I found was inconclusive, it seems like all these boxes have mixed reviews.  I decided to subscribe to Glossybox again because even though the box may not contain as many samples as some of the other beauty boxes, I think the fact that they do larger samples and even full-sized products makes for a better value.

But anyway, on to the November box.  If you look at Glossybox’s Facebook Fan Page, you will find comment after comment from disgruntled customers (it seems worse on Boudoir Prive’s page, the poor staff for these companies…).  I think what people fail to realize is that these companies are made so that you can try new products, products you may or may not like and products you may or may not have heard of before.  If you want a guarantee that you will like what you have spent your money on, then a beauty box is not for you.

I was quite happy with this month’s box and thought it was much better than the July box I received.  Here is what the box contained:

Arbonne FC5 Ultra Hydrating Hand Creme-I have heard of Arbonne before and have always wanted to try their products.  This is a nice little hand creme that is perfectly handbag sized, it has a nice fresh scent.

Dead Sea Spa Magik Dead Sea Bath Salts-When I got home from a long day at work today and found my Glossybox waiting for me, this was the first product I tried out.  They do have a nice softening effect on your skin after use.  Also this was a very generous sample size.

Illamasqua Freak Eau de Parfum-I know everyone seems to complain about the fragrance samples, but I thought this fragrance was particularly nice (too expensive just to run out and buy, but might ask for it as a gift).

Monu Revitalising Moisturizer-This product is full-sized which is great, but my one issue with this moisturizer is the vague product instructions.  I am assuming it is a facial moisturizer because of the UVA and UVB protection, but it is not very clear on the card that Glossybox provides or the product itself.  I will definitely be trying this product out and seeing how it compares with my Neutrogena moisturizer.

Nail Rock Designer Nail Wraps-I was quite pleased with the pattern I received for these and am glad it is something wearable (the black wraps with the white polka dots).  If I had received leopard print on the other hand I may not have been so happy.  I can’t wait to try these out because my nail polish is forever chipping no matter what I do.

So overall, I am very happy with this month’s box.  It was a nice treat to get and I am planning on trying out every single product.  Can’t wait to see what December’s box is going to be like!  I have a feeling its going to be a good one in time for the holidays!
